ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
Stapleton is a neighborhood in northeastern Staten Island that adjoins Tompkinsville to the south. One of the oldest waterfront neighborhoods in the borough, it was built in the 1830s on land previously owned by the Vanderbilt family. The newly upgraded Stapleton waterfront offers a mix of parkland and views of both lower Manhattan and the Verrazano Bridge.
In Stapleton, vibrant street art and multicultural shops are the norm. The recent boom in the extreme sports scene resulted in the opening of New York City's only indoor skatepark open to the public in the neighborhood. Additionally, the launch of the Staten Island MakerSpace has solidified Stapleton as a hub for artists, entrepreneurs, and anyone with a knack for creativity.
The neighborhood surrounds Tappen Park, one of the oldest parks in the neighborhood, giving it a distinctive town-square feel. Stapleton also lays claim to a diversity of restaurants, including an American-style diner and a Gastropub, as well as Sri Lankan, Mexican, and Italian eateries.
"With all the new businesses opening up and all the new residents moving in, anything we can do to clean up Bay Street is great. It'll be good for everybody."
